More and more often we are seeing less of the traditional drip coffee makers and more of the Keurig brand and other brewers that make use of the ever-popular K-Cups. Why is that? Because of how simple it is to make your favorite cup of coffee. As with the traditional drip coffee brands, there are the ever-popular brands and flavors that are considered the best of the best. While Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, Folgers and Maxwell House are all popular amongst those still using the more traditional coffee makers, are they still consider the best Keurig coffee brands?

In order to answer that question, we will have to take a look at all that Keurig has to offer. Granted, most coffees currently on the Keurig market isn't actually created by the Keurig brand; they do make use of the K-Cup design, making them compatible with the Keurig machines.

Before we take a look at the best Keurig coffee currently on the market, it is essential that we take a look at Keurig and learn a little bit about the company and what they offer consumers.

K-Cup or Pod – The Great Keurig Coffee Debate

This may seem like a silly topic to cover, and some may be asking if there is really any difference between a coffee pod or a K-Cup. The truth is, there is a significant difference between the two, even though K-Cups are often referred to as pods.

Both coffee pods and K-Cups are considered single-serve coffee brewing options. The big difference between the two is how they are packaged. Coffee pods are actually just single servings of ground coffee beans wrapped in a round paper filter, similar to the materials that tea bags are made of. That’s it. There is nothing more to them. Water is forced through these mesh filters to produce your cup of coffee.

This same concept is used with K-Cups, but the construction is set up differently. K-Cups are made up of a plastic cup, an aluminum lid, and a filter. Each cup is filled with a single serving of coffee, tea or other beverage. Keurig machines, and those that use similar K-Cup construction brew the beverage by piercing the aluminum seal with a spray nozzle at the top and then pierce the plastic bottom with a discharge nozzle. Hot water is then forced through the spray nozzle through the cup’s contents (the coffee or tea and the filter) before it is dispensed through the discharge nozzle and into your cup.

So why does this all matter? Simply because of the fact that K-Cups are often called pods, and yet, true coffee pods are not suitable for the use in Keurig machines. Alternatively, K-Cups are not usable in machines that coffee pods are used for.

Other single-serve brewing machines make sure of other “pods,” but they each have their own distinctions. The Nespresso machines use capsules, and the Tassimo uses T-Discs.

So, while the term “pod” is used rather generally, it is important to know which single-serve device your brewer uses in order to avoid purchasing the wrong thing.
