One of the most popular drinks that you’ll find at a coffee shop these days is a frappe. So, what is a frappe?

It’s a delicious, chilled coffee drink that has Greek roots. It is cool, light, and yummy, making it the perfect treat for the summer months or anytime you need a sweet pick-me-up.

The good news is that you don’t have to spend several dollars a day to enjoy frappes. No, instead of paying the high prices of a trendy coffee shop, you can make frappes at home.

All it takes is a good frappe recipe, and you can enjoy a homemade frappe as often as you want.

Make a Frappe at Home

As mentioned, it is possible to learn how to make a frappe at home. And, once you have mastered the technique, it just gets easier.

You’ll want to start by adding a heaping tablespoon of coffee to a cocktail shaker. Then, add in water. You’ll want the water to cover the coffee but just barely.

Once your coffee and your water are inside, shake the cocktail shaker. This part is kind of fun and will create the foam that frappes are known for.

After about half a minute of shaking, pour the mixture over ice and add more water if needed.

This simple recipe should create a surprisingly delicious frappe in just a few minutes of your time.

Add Sugar

A traditional Greek frappe is created as described above. You’ll notice that means with no added sugar.

However, many people, including plenty of Greek people, prefer their frappes with sugar added.

So, if you want more of a sweetness to your drink, don’t be afraid to add anywhere from one to two tablespoons of sugar.

Just keep in mind that adding sugar will up the calorie content of this drink, so you may want to think about that or limit how much you add if you are watching your waistline.

Of course, you could always add an artificial sweetener if you prefer.

The choice, though, is completely up to you.

Add Milk

Another common variation on traditional frappes that people like is adding milk to their drinks.

You can add as much or as little milk as you like. You can either add it in the “shaker” stage or at the end, right before serving.

Also, you can vary the calorie content by choosing skim milk over whole milk. You can even make your frappe vegan with almond or soy milk.

There are all kinds of variations that can be achieved by adding milk, but you will usually end up with a lighter, frothier, sweeter drink when you add milk.

In fact, when milk is added, your drink will be a lot more like the type you’ll find at Starbucks or other fancy coffee shops that serve frappes.

Add Vanilla

If you really want your frappe to be a sweet treat, consider adding in vanilla in some form.

A few drops of vanilla flavoring and a little milk makes what is known as a “French” frappe, and it’s delicious.

Or, if you are not concerned with calories and you just want a drink that tastes great, go ahead and add in a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream.

This is a popular tradition among the Greeks for special occasions, and it’s easy to see why. It tastes great and makes the drink much richer and creamier.

Of course, adding ice cream kind of takes it from “coffee” to “milkshake,” but it’s a good indulgence from time to time.

Add a Little Alcohol

Finally, if you ever feel like trying a “grown up” version of this drink, serve your frappe with a little bit of your favorite alcohol.

Frappes tend to taste best when mixed with a rich liquor, but some people do add in their favorite whiskey or other beverage.

This kind of turns your frappe into an “Irish coffee” of sorts, but as long as you enjoy it, it doesn’t really matter what you call it.

As you can see, there are all kinds of ways to enjoy frappes. And, whether you keep it traditionally Greek or not, you’re sure to find the perfect way of serving up your own frappes.

No matter how you serve and enjoy this drink, you should definitely save a lot of money compared to going to the local coffee shop each day.

So, blend those frappes at home, save money, and enjoy. After all, enjoyment is what frappes are all about.
